COUNSELING AND ADVISING
Room 1050 â–ª www.muskegoncc.edu/counseling
Counseling services at Muskegon Community College are available in the Counseling and Advising Center (Room 1050) and virtually via Zoom. The Counseling and Advising Center provides comprehensive academic, career, and personal counseling services that promote student success, well-being, and goal attainment. All MCC counselors have graduate degrees in counseling, psychology, or related fields, and are Licensed Professional Counselors through the State of Michigan.
Central to our mission and daily practice is a commitment to confidentiality, upholding ethical behavior, and providing counseling based on current research and proven standards. All MCC counselors adhere to the professional and ethical guidelines of the American Counseling Association. The Scope of Our Practice serves currently enrolled and prospective students.
Academic advising is central to a student’s educational experience. Counselors assist students in selecting and progressing through an academic pathway aligned with their interests, abilities, and long-term career objectives. MCC offers six academic pathways:
Arts, Humanities & Communication
Engineering/Manufacturing and Industrial Technology
Health Services
Human Services
Business & Information Technology
Math & Science
Students are encouraged to indicate their intended academic pathway when scheduling an appointment to ensure they are connected with the appropriate counselor. Those who are undecided are welcome to meet with any counselor for assistance in exploring options and clarifying their academic and career goals.
Counselors work collaboratively with academic departments and transfer institutions to ensure accurate and strategic course selection. Students planning to transfer after completing coursework at MCC are strongly encouraged to meet with a counselor each semester, as transfer requirements vary by college and university. Through individualized educational planning, counselors help students develop a clear and attainable path toward degree completion and career advancement.
Personal counseling services assist students in adjusting to the college environment and addressing concerns that may affect academic performance or personal well-being. Services are free, confidential, and delivered in a professional and supportive setting. Students commonly seek counseling for concerns such as anxiety, depression, stress management, relationship challenges, academic difficulties, and uncertainty regarding major or career direction.
In addition to individual counseling and advising appointments, the Counseling and Advising Center offers workshops, presentations, and initiatives designed to promote student wellness and holistic development. Counselors are available by appointment Monday through Friday. Appointments may be scheduled in Room 1050, by calling (231) 777-0362, or through the MyMCC student portal.
Express Counseling and Advising is available throughout the week to address immediate concerns in brief 5–10 minute consultations. More comprehensive services—including academic planning, career counseling, personal counseling, and transfer advising—require a scheduled appointment. Extended drop-in hours are offered during peak enrollment periods each semester; specific dates and times are available on the Counseling and Advising Center’s webpage at https://www.muskegoncc.edu/departments/counseling-advising/.
