Course Description
This survey course is designed for anyone interested in gaining a general overview of political science, whether you're planning to take just one course or pursuing further study in areas like American politics, comparative politics, international relations, or political theory. Throughout the course, we will explore various approaches political scientists use to examine political phenomena, enhancing your understanding of political life both as a thinker and a citizen. The primary aim is to introduce you to key concepts, terminology, and methods within the discipline while examining real-world applications of political science.In this introductory course, we will cover fundamental principles of political science by combining historical insights from influential thinkers with an analysis of contemporary issues. We will also delve into key questions that shape the field, such as: How do we define the evolving nature of power? What distinguishes legitimate governance from illegitimate? How do we differentiate between political institutions and political behavior? In what ways do leaders determine who is heard and counted in a political community? By the end of this course, you will be well-versed in these topics and able to engage in discussions about contemporary politics.
